Two pieces of steel wire with identical cross sections havelengths of L and 3L.Each of the wires is fixed at both ends and stretched so that thetension in the longer wire is fourtimes greater than that in the shorter wire. If the fundamentalfrequency in the shorter wire is 50Hz, what is the frequency of the second harmonic in the longerwire?

    We know the formula for the fundamental frequency is
                  
    Given Tlonger = 4Tshorter
              Llonger = 3Lshorter
              nshorter = 50Hz
    nNow
                   
                  
                               =33.3Hz
    So the fundamental frequency of the longer wire is33.3Hz
    Now the frequency of the second harmonic is =2nlonger = 2(33.3Hz) = 66.6Hz
